We have a GE MastrII repeater up in an attic at a school and on hot summers the temp can exceed 120 in the attic. The repeater has survived for many years up there, but I'm afraid your average Linux PC would not make it long in that kind of temperature. Also somewhat related, can anybody advise if app_rpt works on a non-Intel CPU architecture? I have run Asterisk reliably on MIPS and AMD Geode but am not sure if app_rpt (or perhaps the pciradio driver) has any particular affinity for i386ish architecture. I have played with all of their boards many times. You can't load too much channels but it's certainly ok for a single repeater. Regarding low temperature, don't forget that if you start the board before too cold season, the components temperature will be rarely under 0?C due to their internal electrical activity. If you put it inside a correctly sailed box, you will probably have never issue with cold condition. It's more difficult for hot season : you must have something to avoid a direct vew from the sun to the box to avoid high internal temperature. This is the first case of component destruction, not the cold ! You must also add something inside the box for the moisture and condensing condition. Some kind of "valves" in GoreTex are perfect to extract the condensation of water. Maybe >>> you are missing the NO TS-64 jumper? If you are getting receive audio through all of the op-amps, then it has to be a receive audio level problem. (either its too high or too low). You are going to have to put the system in duplex=2 to properly adjust the levels. (See my question below) Also, when you logged in, a few weeks ago, I noticed that your receive audio was way too high. This will cause just as many DTMF decode issues as not enough level. Also, did you follow the audio level adjustment procedure and set the transmit audio to 3 KHz deviation followed by setting the receive audio with a 1 khz signal source so that you get 3KHz of deviaton on the output, per the instructions? Using voice or touch tones will result in the levels being set incorrectly. This all beings up another question. Are you trying to adjust levels without using instrumentation such as a signal generator, service monitor, or deviation meter? It is really difficult to get the system adjusted without this instrumentation by an inexperienced user. I can do it by ear, but it isn't as good as when I do it with instrumentation. If you don't have instrumentation, I would try doing the following: Call into app_rpt using the reverse autopatch feature (you will need to set this up in extensions.conf). Unsquelch the receiver so that you get COR and receiver noise. Turn the RX level pot all the way counterclockwise until you hear nothing (silence). Gradually turn up the RX level pot until you hear some noise, they try using an HT to send DTMF commands. If the tones don't mute, or sound chopped up, try increasing the RX level until you get the tones to mute, and commands start being recognized. NOTE: If you have a receiver with a lot of RX audio output, the RX pot will be touchy, and a fraction of a turn will result in a lot of receiver noise being heard. If this is the case, carefully adjust the pot until you barely hear the noise at first. If DTMF tones don't mute, regardless of the setting of the RX audio pot, try the opposite de-emphasis setting on the ARIB and repeat the above procedure. This procedure isn't the best, and I wouldn't recommend it as an alternate way to set the receive levles, but It should allow you to figure out what is going on with the receive audio. > > Finally got around to do some more testing on the ARIB. I did read the procedures, I have a ham friend with a signal generator thats coming over when he have the time to induce the required signals on the receive circuit. But in the mean time I have a 1kh wav file signal on my other linux box that I can induce the signal in the receive circuit. Yes, I do remeber the talk on the audio adjustment and will not connect to any other node until I get the audio right. I do have an ocilliscope and the Ham friend have the a signal generator right now I have some time to work on it but the ham schedule is quite different and we have to get together when time permits. >If you don't have instrumentation, I would try doing the following: Call >into app_rpt using the reverse autopatch feature (you will need to set >this up in extensions.conf). It installs the Centos 5 Linux operating system, Asterisk (with source code including app_rpt and chan_usbradio), FreePBX, Webmin and a dynamic DNS update client. This package is unique because it installs the latest version of app_rpt directly from the developers' source code repository. And it prompts you for information that is used to set up the configuration files for your first node. Finally, there is an update utility so you can easily install new versions to simply get new features and bug fixes. Check it out at http://www.xelatec.com/asterisk/. If you don't want to use the squelch code in chan_usbradio.c, then hook up the COR to the equivalent received signal indicator on the MastrII. Also take a look in the service manual and make sure the self-repeat mode is disabled. You want all audio and control to go through the USB fob. Also, the repeaterbuilder site has extensive information on GE MastrII radios, and goes into detail on how to interface them to a repeater controller. I'm making the USB Fob and can't for the life of me figure out what I'm supposed to do with AUX_Audio. Obviously it connects to pin 6 on the DSUB through a capacitor. Now what? My that I plan on replacing has TX Audio, RX Audio, COR, PTT, etc just like this one and my radio has all the same. Neither my old controller nor my radio have Aux_Audio. What do I do with that? Or can it be ignored? 73 Paul - KC0WIV From hwstar at rodgers.sdcoxmail.com Mon Nov 26 15:28:18 2007 From: hwstar at rodgers.sdcoxmail.com (Stephen Rodgers) Date: Mon, 26 Nov 2007 07:28:18 -0800 Subject: [App_rpt] USB Fob wiring confusing In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <474AE612.20203@rodgers.sdcoxmail.com> Paul, It can safely be ignored. Aux audio is typically used as an alternate channel to drive an amplifier/speaker so you can listen to repeated audio. (We had to do something with that spare output channel, didn't we?) It installs the Centos 5 Linux operating system, Asterisk (with source code including app_rpt and chan_usbradio), FreePBX, Webmin and a dynamic DNS update client. Best Regards, Steven Henke
