My conclusion is that Asterisk needs to have the CTCSS present no matter what? Settings are: carrierfrom=usbinvert ctcssfrom=no rxdemod=speaker txprelim=no txtoctype=notone ; no - CTCSS tone encoding with no hang time It took me a while to figure out that "invert" means that the COR relay is closed when the signal appears (I would have thought this was not-invert). My tests show that the repeater function does not key up unless both the COR and CTCSS are present. One, or the other, does not do it. This is not what I expected when I selected "no" for the "ctcssfrom" parameter. On the other hand, even when you select 'no" for the "txctcss" it still transmits a tone, so maybe it is consistent. Second issue: The loudest playback sounds cause the URI to go into saturation and distort. I may not have calibrated the levels very carefully, but even if I manually lower the txlevel setting from 800 down to, say, 300 it still distorts - it's just a quieter distortion. What can cause this? Here are the tune settings: [usb] ; name=usb ; devicenum=0 devstr=1-3 rxmixerset=312 txmixaset=800 txmixbset=500 rxvoiceadj=1.259933 rxctcssadj=7.884689 txctcssadj=100 rxsquelchadj=900 Thanks Ken 27021 From matt.g4rky at googlemail.com Tue Jan 5 20:28:44 2010 From: matt.g4rky at googlemail.com (Matt Beasant) Date: Tue, 5 Jan 2010 20:28:44 +0000 Subject: [App_rpt-users] usb radio config file In-Reply-To: <000301ca8e44$c72c4cd0$5584e670$@com> References: <000301ca8e44$c72c4cd0$5584e670$@com> Message-ID: Hi Ken, YOu need to comment out the CTCSS frequency statements in usbradio.conf if you dont want / need for app_rpt to do the decoding in DSP. What can cause this? I have the same problem with a modified CM108 usb installation. After setting all the 'radio tune' parameters, there is serious distortion on voice modulation peaks, irrespective of the source being Iaxrpt or another node. However, the 'radio tune txvoice' generates a perfect sine wave at 3 KHz deviation, as seen on an oscilloscope at the exciter modulator or on a service monitor off-air. I am using duplex=0 in rpt.conf since the node operates simplex. Chances are it has to do with de-emphasis configuration on the receive side, or pre-emphasis/limiting (prelim) in the transmit side) Where is the audio getting distorted? Transmit or receive? so you see the distortion on the TX line or RX line if you look with a scope? You might be able to determine where it is getting distored by connecting your node to a working node you can monitor, then send audio both ways. I guess you get pre-emphasis AND limiting or nothing at all which is too bad because even though it says ; no - Audio is not pre-emphasized and limited. ; Suitable for use on a microphone input once the signal has been trashed, it is not really suitable for anything, especially a microphone input. a better wording might be Audio is not pre-emphasized and NOT limited if audio level exceeds D/A dynamic range it will be severely distorted. the user needs to make sure that levels do not exceed the maximum warning: some of the pre-recorded GSM files exceed the maximum It would be nice if there was an option for limiting with no re-emphasis ... Chances are it has to do with de-emphasis configuration on the receive side, or pre-emphasis/limiting (prelim) in the transmit side) Where is the audio getting distorted? Transmit or receive? so you see the distortion on the TX line or RX line if you look with a scope? Disclaimer: I offer URI support and suggestions as a courtesy only as I do not derive any income from sales of the URI. I am in no way obligated to provide support at any level. Steve WA6ZFT Steve: Thank you for your response. Much appreciated. This distortion also appears when accessing the transmitter digitally via Iaxrpt with no radio receivers involved. Ditto for when my node is connected elsewhere, such as Calnet. The problem is entirely on transmit, somewhere in the route from apt_rpt internals to the MICOR exciter audio input. The receive audio is perfect. I have two independent nodes on separate computers. I followed your suggestion and linked them together. Using a service monitor, I fed 1 KHz tones at various deviations into the receiver of Node A and monitored the transmit output of problem Node B. There is no distortion until reaching 4 KHz. At 5 KHz deviation, there is serious distortion of the sine wave. I want to emphasize that this problem remains constant no matter if the modulation source originates in a radio receiver, another node or Iaxrpt. As Ken mentioned earlier, adjusting txvoice moves the deviation up and down but has no effect upon the distortion. FWIW, the distortion (on voice) sounds like listening to a loudspeaker with a ripped cone. After reading Ken's last post, I tried 'txprelim=yes' and it was a great improvement. It would be nice if the limiting could be selected independently. To summarize: it seems that with 'txprelim=no', audio from a receiver seeing 5 KHz peaks or the equivalent from Iaxrpt or from other nodes, is going to be distorted by the URI being overdriven. Unfortunately, the distortion strikes right at the deviation level that most users hit regularly. I am not using the DMK product. I understand it's a very professional unit. I rolled my own some time ago, following the original construction details. Thanks again for a great system. 73, Dave VE7MQ. Doug KD8B Thanks Doug. The MICOR does indeed have such bias but I removed it by uninstalling the supply resistor in the exciter (ref: repeater-builder.com). For the moment, I am just feeding it to some amplified speakers for testing. They present a high impedance to the URI. I can't prove it, but it sounds like Asterisk is coming up with some audio that is bigger than the 16-bit number that is supposed to hold the value for the D/A and, of course, the next bigger number after full scale is zero or minus full scale or something equally horrible. It is strange that the pre-recorded messages would be subjected to this though. They are, by definition, good-sounding 16-bit audio data. When I listened to one offending phrase off-line (Apple Quicktime) and it sounded fine. I guess the recorded audio passes through additional DSP that alters the levels. Anyway, the limiting feature seems like a good thing to have both with and without pre-emphasis. This works quite well as long as you have a a transmitter using direct FM and not phase modulation. Steve WA6ZFT ******************************************************************** I find the term 'rxdemod=flat' a little confusing, since discriminator audio will contain pre-emphasized audio, generated by a user's transmitter. I assume that apt_rpt converts receive audio to 'flat' by de-emphasizing discriminator audio but not 'speaker' audio, (as selected) prior to presenting it to other nodes or to the transmitter software routines? I'm also guessing that the apt_rpt internal flat audio, generated as above or from other nodes/Iaxrpt, feeds the radio transmit software module, where it is treated as per the 'txprelim' switch before going to the analog interface. I hope I'm not the only one that wondered about the precise functioning of the usbradio.conf audio selections and how they operate. If I am, it's worth a beer. Snippet from usbradio.conf.sample: rxdemod=flat ; Rx Audio Source Type from Radio ; Options = no, flat, speaker ; no - RX audio input not used ; flat - source is un-filtered discriminator signal ; speaker - source is filtered, de-emphasized audio txprelim=yes ; Tx Audio PreEmphasis and Limiting in software ; no - Audio is not pre-emphasized and limited. ; for application to radio microphone input ; yes - Audio is pre-emphasized, limited and filtered ; for direct connection to an FM modulator I second Ken's motion to clarify the wording a little, next time you're revising the file. 73, Dave VE7MQ. I found two problems which may, or may not, be related. first issue: During the QSO, there were a lot of drop outs (both ways apparently). These were accompanied by "Hungup..." messages on the console. I think these are not anything to do with audio or USB, but rather with the internet (parrot mode works fine, for example). I wonder what other people's experience is with this? Could it be something my ISP is doing to me (they are famous for this kind of thing). This happens in monitor-only mode too, and apparently it is noticeable on the other and as at some point when I was doing this a control operator came on and said my node was 'coughing' and then proceeded to disconnect me from his end. I hate to think I am screwing up other peoples systems by just listening to them. What to do? I noticed that there is a "drop count" parameter in IAX [from this I concluded that the inter-asterisk exchange protocol must have some end to end acknowleements ?] second issue: when I connect my first node to my second node on the same machine I get a ping-pong effect (or similar) where the first node keeps playing the courtesy tone (and PTT remains on continuously) and the second node drops the PTT but immediately keys up again. No received audio passes from node 1 to node 2 while all this beeping is going on. I have commented off the CTCSS commands for node 2 and courtesy tones as well. I expect this is something stupid I have done that should be easy to fix. This is version 0.208 - perhaps in my version this parameter has no effect? It seemed not to do anything. Would it be worth getting the update installed? To clarify - these are two nodes in the same computer. They are both configured as DUPLEX as they are intended to control two repeaters (someday). What I am intending to test is the linking of the two repeaters together. I get the pingpong effect even if I connect in the monitor-only mode. And it doesn't matter if I connect node 2 to node 1, or do it the other way around. If I try to connect to another on line echo link node using the 7 digit number, I get absolutely nothing. No messages from debug or verbose and the asterisk node says it is still in the repeat only mode. (yes I did port forwarding in my router for the asterisk computer IP address). I searched the knowledge base the mail archives for a while under the subject "echolink" but could not find any hints. Is there some online/offline switch for echolink? How can I trouble-shoot? I am not a hardware engineer, ok, so the repeater to Linux interface might need some hardware. So app_rpt manages that??? Same is for Base Nodes??? What is my problem here? I have to build a system where users communicate through their microphone head set, to the other receivers/transmitters (also on the computer), like emulating an Amateur Radio environment, through VOIP. Different users on different frequencies, all communicating with each other, Linked through a server like Asterisk. A typical VOIP conference call, though we have to provide frequencies like Amateur radio. Now the above problem can be done with Asterisk. But since app_rpt is for specially Amateur Radio environments, how can I use the functionality provided by app_rpt. app_rpt links the Base Nodes/Repeaters would it be useful as a server for managing users at their frequencies communicating, adding it's extra capability of linking nodes. I don't need the hardware support from this module, as I am using just a microphone head set. Any replies will be greatly appreciated. I have already been through a lot of research to reach to Asterisk first, then a client, then app_rpt. And the app_rpt site is very hardcore technical stuff. -- Regards, Babar Abbas. They can be configured as repeater (full duplex) or base station (half-duplex) operation. There is no difference in the way half-duplex and full duplex nodes connect to each other. Multiple connections are handled by each node only limited by network bandwidth and PC processing power. All receive audio is mixed and retransmitted to all other connected nodes. No node has audio priority over any other node. App_rpt can be configured as a single or multi-node system on the same PC. App_rpt usually manages a hardware radio interface on a per-node basis, however a node can be operated "headless" as a conference server as well. One radio hardware interface is assigned per node. Hardware radio interfaces supported are the QRV Communications LLC Quad Radio PCI card and the DMK Engineering URI. After all it's for Amateur Radio's so special equipment is needed and interfaced to the PC, there by, getting the Radio Internet signals interchanged. The scheduler must invoke a macro and not user functions directly. 2. Macros may be limited to 1 digit (not sure). Try with single digit macros then try a multi-digit and see if it breaks or works. 3. Don't forget: You should restart asterisk when the rpt.conf file is changed. In the shack, I have a Polycom IP501 speaker phone that I use to monitor or connect into QSO's on the node. Out of the shack, I can call into the node using my Blackberry and do the same. So the next challenge is to get quick notifications of users connecting into the node either via radio or Internet (Echolink and Allstar..no IRLP yet). I created a pair of Twitter accounts; one for the node and another for me personally. I added my node's Twitter account to the ones I follow with my personal account and created an AGI scripts that formats a curl command which posts some of the context variables passed in when Asterisk invokes the script (context name, extension, callerid, etc). I then added the AGI call into various extension stanzas in extensions.conf to test. If, for instance, I do a reverse autopatch and connect to the reverse autopatch "extension", I almost immediately get an SMS tweet on the Blackberry. Great. However, it seems that connections via the radio are not processed in any way in extensions.conf (thought [default] stanza would apply but apparently only applies to autopatch), and inbound connections from either Allstar or Echolink, while processed through [radio-secure], hang on the AGI call and don't proceed to the following call to rpt. I'm assuming this is because AGI calls generally follow an "Answer" and are only valid in the connected state. I tried "deadAGI" since it doesn't seems to be dependent on being in the answered state but it hung the same way. It's possible I've got a problem in the AGI script which is causing the hang but it certainly doesn't occur when the AGI call follows "Answer". So I'm looking for help to understand other possible ways to invoke a script that calls curl to post the tweet when a radio user makes an outbound connection to Allstar or Echolink and when an Echolink or Allstar user connects in to the radio. Given that restarting Asterisk doesn't resolve the problem, this could be an issue with the USB hardware or its driver. You have to spend some time examining the system while it's in the failed state. Look at log files and /proc files and see if something is unusual. I suppose you could also add a cron job to reboot the system weekly and see if the problem disappears, but that just masks the problem.
