Ok been able to force a download of the server config..
the network was broken.. (there was nothing in the resolf.conf file..)
when I got it back to usb radio and restarted asterisk all was fine.. did a reboot and all seem ok now...
looks like I WILL have to use usbradio... 
Now.. lets work on streaming this thing to the world!! HA  HA HA HA HA .. oups.. its only streaming.. not world domination ;-)))
