CENTOS has GNU "nano"
According to Wikipedia pico (that you mentioned) is a clone of nano, so I
expect they will be similar.
Why not have your neophytes use WinSCP and a Windows editor? It facilitates
keeping off-line backup copies of the files you are messing with (among
other things).

Subject: [App_rpt-users] Editor
Is there a neophyte editor in the acid release? This is not for me, I use Vi
but I am installing systems for a couple of guys who I would not trust with
Vi. I know IRLP uses Pico on Debian and that seems like a nice simple
editor. Is that available for Centos?
