This whole argument or discussion about having to deal with the 
utilities you need to have some knowledge of on the system can be 
likened to walking into a Ferrari dealer, looking at and lusting over a 
599, but complaining that it doesn't have an automatic slushbox tranny 
because you don't know how to drive a manual (discounting the flappy 
paddle dual clutch shifter on the steering wheel that mimics an auto but 
is in reality a computer controlled manual) clutch and stick.

Some things just should require some effort.  Does knowing how to use 
VI/PICO/EMACS/? make you a good repeater operator?  Of course not. 
But...if you let NOT knowing how to use a plain editor is keeping you 
from the goodness...sheesh, it's NOT that hard to learn on some 
non-critical files, get minimally comfortable, and go for it.
