I rigged a solenoid connected to a knife switch and all is well. Just that banging noise when someone keys up on the channel.

Just a suggestion in general:
We are ham radio operators. By definition, we have, at least, a certain basic knowledge of
electronics (as is required to pass our test).
If two devices are somehow electrically incompatible with each other, use your knowledge of
electronics to build a simple circuit to interface them together. Converting from one set of
"levels" to another is REALLY not that difficult.
That's why we are what we are, and do what we do.

P.S. Or, you can use pin 8 *LIKE EVERY ONE ELSE DOES*!!
