Hey, isn’t there a mute switch on those? I’ve got about 10 of them here now. But anyway, with the LED’s plus up/down/mute buttons exposed, that would sure make things pretty straightforward, no? Maybe? I wish I was smart.

Might be a good option if you wanted to desolder the entire board which it did famously, but removing the blob also removed the chip and after that of course the computer wouldn't recognise the device. $3.50 down the flusher, oh well!
