Skyler,

The connect message are fixed but you can add custom connect messages for specific nodes. There are some that are in the distribution as examples....

 ls /var/lib/asterisk/sounds/rpt/nodenames
2001.ulaw 2011.ulaw 2014.ulaw 2025.ulaw 2059.ulaw 2063.ulaw 2391.ulaw 27136.ulaw
2003.ulaw 2012.ulaw 2016.ulaw 2030.ulaw 2060.ulaw 2065.ulaw 27016.ulaw
2010.ulaw 2013.ulaw 2022.ulaw 2043.ulaw 2061.ulaw 2070.ulaw 27058.ulaw

If you put a sound file in there with a node number that you connect to it will say that text rather than the canned text.

You could also replace the Alison files with other voice but that would get a little tricky. When it says node xxxxx connected to yyyyy - it is really using words strung together - in this case each individual number then the word connected then the number 2 (for 'to') etc. The files are located in /var/lib/asterisk/sounds and sub directories. The files would also have to conform to the standards required by Asterisk - file type, sample rate, etc. While it might be faster to substitute Google created files I think it would sound choppy in this case because it was not created as a complete sentence.

In general there is no requirement to use Alison files for voice that you create. You do have other options. You can use Google voice to create sound files or even create them with your own voice using a mic and sound recorder. As long as the file meets the requirements for playing in Asterisk it will work. The BBB has an automated script to do Google voice sound files but you could do it manually also on a PC.

Google voice will say any text you throw at it although sometimes you have to be a little creative in how you word it for it to sound exactly right. It will say something like the current weather forecast or perhaps if you want to say something about a club meeting on a repeater etc. Things that Alison would not do. AT&T has a demo page also that works well but there are limitations on how you can use the files it creates. I have occasionally used it but it is not clear if amateur use would be acceptable, it may not be. Commercial use is definitely not allowed.

Is it possible for Allison to speak a bit faster when it's like "node xyz connected to node 40764"? Maybe wait less time in between the numbers when you connect or add my own audio files that are shorter?
