Yes that is probably true but unfortunately the echolink smartphone application is a lot easier to use and much more intuative than any of the free iax or sip products I have seen out there. Also with sip or iax you need a setup and PW that you would have to give out in advance to everyone who wanted to access. OK for the node sysop but not for everyone else. 
Anyone want to write an iphone/android app just for Allstar?!

I have it setup on my hub and 90% of the time the connections are from our own Allstar users that don't have a node nearby but have a smartphone and can easily get in on Echolink.
 Seems like a softphone app connecting via IAX or SIP would allow you to rid yourself of Echolink entirely.
