Chris,
Your message went into the wrong folder on my e-mail. Sorry for the delay.

Lets start by NOT auto starting asterisk

add to /etc/init.d/asterisk:
exit 0 after:

DAEMON=/usr/sbin/asterisk
TRUE=/bin/true

So, it should read:

DAEMON=/usr/sbin/asterisk
TRUE=/bin/true
exit 0

reboot and lets see the output of asterisk -vvvcd
