Finally got it working. Had to reset some settings in my router and clear the pipes. Thank you all.

I apologize for veering off topic here, but "curl http://checkip.amazonaws.com/" is another favorite of mine for checking public IP address of a server / headless system. Just SSH in and paste that into the shell.
