On linux or OSX, you should do "sync;sync" to make sure that the kernel 
flushed all the buffers before ejecting the USB card.  The second sync may 
be redundant, but old habits die hard.

Only when you get the command prompt after sync;sync are you guaranteed 
that everything was flushed to the card.
