After a "Buster" initial install I have tried to use this set of instructions published on the ASL FAQ but always get a ASL missing dependencies message. Can ASL be installed on an existing Linux install, for example on a VM running Debian? Yes it can. More information to follow. This Mailman list will become read only on October 1, 2019. The new list runs on Discourse and is located at https://community.allstarlink.org Discourse is gaining wide adoption across the internet with usage by companies such as Asterisk and Docker. There are tons of features in Discourse. To list only a few wouldn?t be a fair summary of the reasons we?re moving. Those will become apparent over time and subsequent posts. See https://community.allstarlink.org/faq#signup for details. - You only need to logon once to activate your email. From then on you can use the forum in maillist mode if you prefer. - The Mailman archives are included and searchable within the AllStarLink Community forum. - You may migrate to Community at any time before or after the October 1, 2019 cutover date. Otherwise your posts are still there with but an email that's not your current. Not a big deal. You could signup again with your other email if it's important to you. I *might* be able to disable the new one you signed up with. Let me know. The other advantage of using your Mailman email is you immediately get some privileges that otherwise take a short time to achieve. You just have to stick around a short while before you can post. Again, not a big deal because the privileges escalate pretty fast. The escalation is nothing more than a spam prevention technique. Either way it maters not so much. Make sure it is the file with the .img at the end. Also download the .readme file as that has the instructions and passwords needed to get started. http://dvswitch.org/files/ASL_Images/Raspberry_Pi/Stretch/ Then download Win32diskImager (free software) so you can write the image to a micro sd card. You can google how to write and image using Win32disImager if you have never done this before. Once your Pi boots up and you follow the .readme instructions there should be an ASL menu system that pops up on your screen. The first choice is 1) Run Firstime Menu You should start there to configure your node. Before you install the software on your Pi you will want to have the following node number information. See this for where to find the information needed to setup you node. https://wiki.allstarlink.org/wiki/Beginners_Guide Marshall - ke6pcv From: App_rpt-users [mailto:app_rpt-users-bounces at lists.allstarlink.org] On Behalf Of Jeffrey Reid Sent: Tuesday, September 24, 2019 1:55 AM To: app_rpt-users at lists.allstarlink.org Subject: [App_rpt-users] Need some Ground Up Information Hello All, I have one of Mark?s micro-node?s to connect to Allstar and have a node number through Allmon, (490470.) No need to have an OS on the micro sd card before you image to the card. You need a screen and keyboard attached to the Pi. The Pi used HDMI for a screen and you can use a USB keyboard. Or you can use SSH and remote into the Pi from another computer, but you need the ip address of the Pi to do that. I will have to order a small screen as well as keyboard. I do have to do some configuring with the program, such as adding node number, the wifi number/passcode, etc. as well as other parameters. The next two questions are? 1) Does the Pi4 machine have to be connected to ethernet for the first configuration. Now I would suppose that if I have a screen attached to the Pi unit, (as well as keyboard,) then a page should pop up with prompts for me to fill in for my particular node?s configuration. After that is all done. I plug the Pi into the RIM Lite I got from Repeater-Builder, plug the whole shebang into a newly acquired Alinco 235 radio and Voila! However just to let you know ... to set up Allstar you don't need to buy a monitor and keyboard just to set things up originally. If you plug a network cable into the PI you can look at your routers DHCP assignments and find the IP assigned to your PI. Once you know that you can use your Windows PC and use it as your monitor and keyboard. You would run a Program called Putty. When it starts it will ask for information. Use the IP address you obtained from your router, Use port 222 and tick the SSH button It will talk to the Pi and ask for your login information. Haven't done an install for some time so I'm not up to speed on the latest configuration process but sounds like the group has pointed you down the right path. And now one final comment. If all you own is a Raspberry Pi4 as Marshal pointed out the version of software that's available here isn't ready for the Pi4 yet. That leaves you with two options to run Allstar. 1. Purchase an older version of the Pi until a new version is available. 2. Check the Hamvoip group. Believe their version will run on the Pi4. I will say that from all reports I have seen the Pi4 requires more power and cooling and is somewhat of an overkill for what is needed just to run Allstar. Since you aren't using a web browser/gui with the Allstar it's is mostly ran headless and programmed from a terminal program from some other device such as Putty on your Windows PC or SSH from Linux. Hope that helps Larry - N7FM On 9/24/19 3:57 PM, Jeffrey Reid wrote: > Thanks Marshall, that was what I was wondering. ? ?I will have to order > a small screen as well as keyboard. ?I do have to do some configuring > with the program, such as adding node number, the wifi number/passcode, > etc. as well as other parameters. ?The next two questions are? > > 1) ?Does the Pi4 machine have to be connected to ethernet for the first > configuration. ?I imagine that for the first time it would. > > 2) ?Does the current program work with Pi4? > > So, just to get it all straight in my feeble brain. ?Download the > program image it onto an sd card. ?Simple enough. ?I have a Windows box > to do just that. ?Insert the card into the Pi4 box and wait for it to do > its thing. > > Now I would suppose that if I have a screen attached to the Pi unit, (as > well as keyboard,) then a page should pop up with prompts for me to fill > in for my particular node?s configuration. > > After that is all done. ?I plug the Pi into the RIM Lite I got from > Repeater-Builder, plug the whole shebang into a newly acquired Alinco > 235 radio and Voila! ?I should have a simplex allstar node for fellow > amateurs in the area to enjoy. > > Now a more interesting question is this?. > > Can I program the node to connect to say the Alaskan Morning Net, the > Winsytem, the Manchester Hub, etc at different times during the day or > week. ?Lets say we start Monday through Friday with the Alaskan Morning > Net and afterwards the node connects to the Winsystem through the > Insomniac Net and then transfers over to the Manchester Hub, rinse and > repeat everyday? ?is that possible? > > Again, thanks for everyone?s help. > > Regards, > > Jeffrey ?N6TDG > > > > _______________________________________________ > App_rpt-users mailing list > App_rpt-users at lists.allstarlink.org > http://lists.allstarlink.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/app_rpt-users > > To unsubscribe from this list please visit http://lists.allstarlink.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/app_rpt-users and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Lu VencL KA4EPS On Sep 25, 2019, at 1:35 AM, larry wrote: Jeffery, As Marshal says you are on the right path. Hope that helps Larry - N7FM On 9/24/19 3:57 PM, Jeffrey Reid wrote: Thanks Marshall, that was what I was wondering. I will have to order a small screen as well as keyboard. I do have to do some configuring with the program, such as adding node number, the wifi number/passcode, etc. as well as other parameters. The next two questions are? 1) Does the Pi4 machine have to be connected to ethernet for the first configuration. I imagine that for the first time it would. 2) Does the current program work with Pi4? So, just to get it all straight in my feeble brain. Download the program image it onto an sd card. Simple enough. I have a Windows box to do just that. Insert the card into the Pi4 box and wait for it to do its thing. I should have a simplex allstar node for fellow amateurs in the area to enjoy. Now a more interesting question is this?. Can I program the node to connect to say the Alaskan Morning Net, the Winsytem, the Manchester Hub, etc at different times during the day or week. Lets say we start Monday through Friday with the Alaskan Morning Net and afterwards the node connects to the Winsystem through the Insomniac Net and then transfers over to the Manchester Hub, rinse and repeat everyday? is that possible? Again, thanks for everyone?s help. There is beta hardware in place where the beagle is a more appropriate choice thus the inquiry. Others have pointed out thankfully that an image exists.
