    It is still in the rules. Control has been broadened beyond a
    control radio to include fiber optic, telco, and wireline (to
    include internet). the radio can be any amateur frequency now, no
    longer required to be above 220 MHz.I believe you are referencing
    line (b):<br>

    §97.213 Telecommand of an amateur station. <br>
    An amateur station on or within 50 km of the Earth's surface may be
    under telecommand where: <br>
    (a) There is a radio or wireline control link between the control
    point and the station sufficient for the control operator to perform
    his/her duties. If radio, the control link must use an auxiliary
    station. A control link using a fiber optic cable or another
    telecommunication service is considered wireline. <br>
    (b) Provisions are incorporated to limit transmission by the station
    to a period of no more than 3 minutes in the event of malfunction in
    the control link. <br>
    (c) The station is protected against making, willfully or
    negligently, unauthorized transmissions. <br>
    (d) A photocopy of the station license and a label with the name,
    address, and telephone number of the station licensee and at least
    one designated control operator is posted in a conspicuous place at
    the station location.<br>

      Most of the exciters I use in repeater service, or hot spot for
      matter, have a TOT in the firmware. I crank them all the way up.
      Sometimes that is not as long as I would like but I feel better.
      As Kevin says, there are USB radio interfaces available with
      timers. The rules in the US may have changed but I remember a time
      when a repeater required a control channel on 220 MHz and above.
      But I'm old (licensed in 1969) and things change. The "belt and
      suspenders" approach can be a good thing.<br>

                      There are no versions of Asterisk/app_rpt along
                      with hardware that are stable enough to prevent
                      this condition from ever happening.   <br>
                      <br>
                      You may want to consider a radio adapter that
                      disables the PTT when the application has crashed
                      or stopped, there's a hardware malfunction, or a
                      communications issue with the radio adapter.  The
                      URI doesn't currently have this functionality, but
                      there are several others that do.<br>
