I use several WiFi routers in client mode (not all support it) for CISCO VoIP phones and Ethernet printers.
I believe this inexpensive device in client mode will do what you want. It connects to your computer, then provides a wifi link to the ssid/password you pre select.http://www.tp-link.us/products/details/?categoryid=3143&model=TL-WR702N

As far as getting wireless working once you have the appropriate driver is called a "wireless connection manager". One that comes to mind is called wicd. Hope this helps a bit.
