Does this happen often? I some times have their APRS turned on VFO they the switch to a repeater which some times cause the packet burst to go over the repeater.
There is a web site that has audio samples of all sorts of digital modes http://www.kb9ukd.com/digital/
That could help you identify what kind of digital noise you heard.
