You might also want to try different hardware platforms and do direct installs (without using virtualization) to try and identify what makes the problem come and go.

Also, in case I wasn't clear, this behavior is on a direct hardware install with no virutalization. My virtualized tests didn't work so I've put them aside until I can get it working on real hardware.
