Bob, this is not a matter of ASL supporting it but rather a matter of the underlying operating system.  I can't speak to the .img that is pre-built but I will say that if you use a vanilla version of Raspbian and go from there (following the directions of how to setup the supplicant and all the requisite things) then it should work.... https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/wireless/wireless-cli.md

Of course not using the supplied image also may come with it's own challenges too...
