okay... you asked...
First of all you need to get the detailed datasheet on the device especially
the info on the HID interface part of the device (as far as what info is available
to be sent/received about the IO pins, so that you can sense/control them).
As an illustration of this, I included a copy of the CM108 datasheet. See section
7.4 on page 20 to see what I am talking about. Read the whole document regarding
the HID interface. If this doesn't confuse and discourage you (it did me) please continue.
Then you need to see if the device REALLY has the audio quality necessary for the task.
It MUST have completely flat linear response from DC (yes, I REALLY MEAN DC!!!) to at
least 20 KHz (so that squelch can be processed properly) at a sample rate of 48K Sampes/Sec.
The device also must be capable of variable input and output gain in a reasonable range
on par with the CM-108. I dont care what the specs say, you MUST verify this and see it for
yourself by doing an audio sweep test and seeing its response (both in and out).
If you happen to get this far, then you need to modify the HID routines (in chan_usbradio)
to accommodate whatever the device does with its HID to make the IO work, and also possibly
the routines that deal with audio gain settings of the device.

sorry to have opened this can of worms marshall, nothing personal taken here.yes ,the DMK device, is a quality device and we have used a few of them with great results, so for quality and consistency by all means use the DMK device!but some of our systems are done on a "beer buget" and have been for a great long time and they work quite well, last long time.so we want to add the App_rpt function to these systems and want to do it on the low cost side. so we use the cm108 based fob.we started out with these devices, learned a lot with these devices and still wish to use these devices, because of cost savings. ( we dont have a dues paying membership in our organization, we do it for the fun of ham radio!)yes maybe we could have bought a couple of DMKs verses the many 10+ fobs i have bought. but hey if they all were cm108 based them i would have many usable devices to play with. some were not cm 108 based, some were. so i gambled with my $$, win some loose some. no big deal.if i knew a bit more on how to make the non standard fobs play with the app_rpt program i would be experimenting with it, but i do not have those skills yet.would some one like to share on how they got the cm108 device to worki would entertain on being shown a how to if possible or a link to where i can study up on this.as i have a few knock off samples to test and play with.i just cannot believe they cannot be made to work the same way asthe cm108 device.yes it takes time to compile and test the devices and time i have, in fact several of us here in the kc metro area have time and facilities to test with . just tell us how it was done...and we can/will start playing.... to come up with a solution.or if jim wants we can ship him the devices we have and he can tell us if it is possible to change the code for these units.i like the fact all i need is PTT, discrimiator and tx audio to make a system work . i could careless about COS/TOS from the radio. this makes an interface real EZ! and the software makes the controller.i am not a programmer but i have learned a lot from the elmers on this listthese folks in particular:w9shn4irswb6nilkd8bwa6zftand many others.to those i give many thanks for the help & enlightenment.....--

What is the obsession with these FOBs? This community has a great source of quality interfaces, and there is NO reason not to utilize them. DMK doesn't HAVE to provide the URI, but thankfully they do. For all you who have bought knockoff FOBs with the hopes of them being a CM108, how much money have you wasted? If you are too cheap to buy a URI, go run an EchoStink node!

JimIf you would like samples of some of the ones i have obtained,thinking they were cm-108 based and they were not.....:(i can send you a few for testing & evauation.if it would make the fobs ezer to add since there seems to be a glut of the "clones" out there.i have bought so many of these from the C.H.Ina co via the usual hong-knog souces.i have a few so a wide and varried sample for testing is not a problemthey are just cluttering up the desk...--
