Well, no, actually what you both want and need is to set it up as a remote base.


First of all, the configuration for a remote base is MUCH simpler (its about 5 or 6 lines in rpt.conf), and

avoids the possibility of DTMF and other things from the system to which it is tuned from controlling your

station (your node), and, therefore, potentially other stations linked to your node.


That is what a remote base is for.

Congrats on the license, If you are only wanting to access one repeater, a basic simplex node is all that is needed, remote base gets a bit more complicated, and is primarily used for controlling a radio, i.e. changing frequencies/channels etc, and has limited compatibility. If you just setup a simplex node, much simpler and will work fine for talking over one repeater/frequency. 

When you setup the node, want to make sure there are not courtesy tones, or hang time setup, as that will cause an annoyance for users of the repeater... basically in the node configuration file rpt.conf setting duplex=0 works well... I do the same thing to link to local repeater system here...

I would use whatever radio you want to use, I have an icom 207h older rig, but works great, I have used an icom706mkiig, and Kenwood TM-V71A's as well, it's just personal preference, ease of interfacing etc... 
Motorola radio's are fine, if you have someone who can program them for you... I have used ebay and qrz.com to purchase older radios, sometimes find quite the deal.

I've been looking at some of the cool things you can do with allstar, and I am interested in the "remote base" scenario.  Do I understand this correctly:  I could put a 2m radio at my house that's wired into a URI plugged into a Pi2 or PC running linux with app_rpt that becomes a node on allstar and then I could dial in via a client and monitor and talk on the local repeater?  If that is a bad use case, then I hope someone will tell me now.

I have read a bit on this and everyone seems to say that I should look at an older Motorola radio for this.  Is that because it is a waste to use a nicer radio when it is only going to stay on one repeater? Or is it because it is easier to interface with? Or both? I put a Yaesu FT-2900R in my car and I thought that I would use that, but I think I am sensing that would not be the best way to go.
