Or use logrotate. Google it... here's how I do it...

[root@Huntington logrotate.d]# cat asterisk 
/var/log/asterisk/messages /var/log/asterisk/*log {
   monthly
   rotate 12
   missingok
   notifempty
   sharedscripts
   postrotate 
   /usr/sbin/asterisk -rx 'logger reload' > /dev/null 2> /dev/null 
   endscript 
}
[root@Huntington logrotate.d]# pwd
/etc/logrotate.d
[root@Huntington logrotate.d]#
