Many thanks for jogging my memory. Being in the old bash/vi mode I often don't think of the other options.  I think the winscp might be the best choice but I looked at nano and yes it does look like a pico clone.

According to Wikipedia pico (that you mentioned) is a clone of nano, so I expect they will be similar.

 

Why not have your neophytes use WinSCP and a Windows editor? It facilitates keeping off-line backup copies of the files you are messing with (among other things).

Is there a neophyte editor in the acid release? This is not for me, I use Vi but I am installing systems for a couple of guys who I would not trust with Vi.  I know IRLP uses Pico on Debian and that seems like a nice simple editor. Is that available for Centos?
