Skyler, Yes, Allstar will operate on a Pi as a simplex node. Is it perfect? No. The USB has to be droped back to 1.1 but it does function. I did not create a image that can be burned to a card and run. I have some scripts and instructions that will help someone compile and run a simplex node on a Pi. It's not a hold your hand project. This is probably something that has been asked a lot before, but with new advances to the pi, more ram etc. I am curious if anyone has it working. A lot of people who want to set up a node keep ask me if it works on the pi. Does AllStar work on the raspberry pi for a simple node?

Be very careful running Allstar on the Pi. It is subject to all kinds of problems including hangups. We already went through all the testing on that platform a year ago and that is why we are using the Beaglebone Black. I can't understand why anyone would want to run Allstar on the Pi when you have a perfectly good and very easy to use setup with all the bells and whistles on the BBB that just works. Doug, I am "the person" that "claims" it works, as you well know from direct mail you sent when I posted back in December. We have been running it 24 hours a day 7 days a week since then. The decision we made was to give it a try, to fix what was broke if possible. You make your decision, we will make ours. Since both the Pi and the BBB will only support one URI, they are both computerizes. I posted over a month ago that it does work. I offered anyone that asked a link to the tarball. Anyone who responded was sent the link. Any suggestions we added. I don't claim it a package, I don't claim support. No more no less then the overall AllStar system. Not all of us need you to hold our hand. Thanks to Jim we have a very nice system and we support each other just fine. I will answer questions, I will lend support when asked. Just to set this straight. I am not dictating anything. The question was asked and I gave my opinion. You do what you want. We have already investigated it and I believe made the right decision based on a lot of studies by more than one person. If the person or persons that claim to have the pi running want to release and support a package that is fine but to say "yeah it works" and give that expectation to others who don't have any idea even how to start getting it to work raises false hopes. Most people don't want to mess with software and hardware. They just want something to work.
It is no small task to put together a package and support it. Most people appreciate what we have done. That being said anyone is certainly free to do whatever they want. Experimentation is the name of the game.
I'm not sure why some has to get ridiculous with the German goose step references. I personally appreciate all of the work Doug and I'm sure others have put into the BBB. It's cheap and you can have a basic node and even a few more advanced features on the air in less than an hour for cheap money. My BBB has been rock solid and Doug and others on this list have provided support that has gone above and beyond anything I expected! With that said if someone wants to experiment that's great and I like to do the same things. I've been on this list for a while and I kept hearing about the BBB and never considered it until recently. I can tell a lot of work went into that. There are some advanced features that have been scripted so all you have to do is follow the prompts. An example would be using a powered USB hub and making a image onto another USB flash drive while your system is live. This is great since my system is at a remote site. So I can make a complete image remotely so if I loose a micro sd card. I can insert a new one and restore my card again. It would be great to see advances using the RPi since that is what ham radio is about. Bob / N1XBM
It's one thing to do a proof-of-concept and roll out some files and then say "have a nice day but no support is provided". All too often I see that in the technology and experimentation world, which may be fine for some, but less than ideal for other, less technical folks. Doug has gone way beyond that point by not only doing the proof-of-concept but also providing a number of scripts to make the install smooth on the BBB (my BBB install was SO much easier than my first ACID install). Beyond that Doug has set up a very detailed web site to answer just about any question one might have about setting up Allstar on a BBB. But above even that effort Doug has explained many of the various configuration facets of Allstar that previously had been something of a mystery. He not only explained some things in his BBB web page that were simply not all the clear before related to general Allstar setup, but when asked (and I for one did ask several questions of him) he responded to those questions with clear, concise responses. Aside from the BBB-specific documentation itself, his web site is an excellent learning experience related to Allstar configuration overall. Experimentation is certainly a cornerstone of ham radio and all those who have put forth these various solutions on different platforms are to be commended for the efforts, as some of us don't have the expertise or time to do that ourselves but still wish to be involved in this new technology. It just seems to me that Doug went the extra mile to put together the BBB setup (after more than a little testing on the RPI platform first) then provide significant and detailed documentation to help all of us.
