Parallel 900MHz Links
We are finally at the last phase of our build-out with three repeater locations with minimal overlap. We want to vote and simulcast on 2 meters. I asked how I could get IRLP and EchoLink connected, as well as a weather receiver and it was suggested that I get an unvoted URI for a controller (like the RC-210's that we have) and use them to bring in outside sources. That was a great idea! But then it dawned on us that if in the event of a major earthquake or tornado or whatever the Internet would go down - and those sources too. This became even more of an important matter because we want to run a parallel 900MHz link system. We can't use the RC-210 approach because if the internet goes down so would our link. The repeaters are too far apart for building our own Ubiquity VLAN - I think. I don't know the maximum power available at 900MHz and we don't have LOS between the sites. What are some ideas on getting a parallel link system in case we lose Allstar? Thank you for helping me learn. Bob

Thank you all for your replies. The issue at this point, and I think I complicated the question by mentioning LoS, is how to get a parallel link when using Allstar. Allstar requires of course access to the Internet or Intranet (Ubiquity, etc.). But if the Internet or Intranet go down how can we have a parallel network when Allstar is using the I/O's on the Motorola MSF 5000? Talking about it earlier we thought of using a DTMF controller with relays or solid state switching to so that we can disconnect Allstar and switch to the link system. But is there an easier way? You wouldn't do it that way.

Depending on your hardware, you can have several radios connected to the same AllStar box. There is no need for relays and more complication. Set up a remote base radio connected to the AllStar box. If the Internet goes down, link the repeater to the network with the remote base radio. - - Going down a different path, that isn't LOS: There are at least two companies making wifi cards for your favorite wifi router boards (RouterBoard - StarOS - Ubiquiti, etc.) that operate in the 420 - 450 MHz area. They are 5 MHz wide compatible (channel splitting - cloaking). I'm not saying you should use them as it *may* not be within the FCC rules for the US, but they are available.
