JUST DONT DO IT!!! There is a reason that we dont support regular sound
cards. THEY DONT WORK WORTH A POO! They sound terrible, and are inconsistent. Friends dont let friends use internal soundcards to interface to radio systems.

I have been having a heck of a time trying to find a fob with a cm108 chip in it. I have 5 fobs here all from different suppliers and none of them have the right chip even though they were listed as a cm108.
I had seen a alsaradio channel driver and tried that but it errors our asterisk with a 127 error. Is there anything out there so that we can use serial/soundcard interfacing instead of a fob or the expensive
quad card?

sorry to have opened this can of worms marshall, nothing personal taken here. yes ,the DMK device, is a quality device and we have used a few of them with great results, so for quality and consistency by all means use the DMK device! but some of our systems are done on a "beer buget" and have been for a great long time and they work quite well, last long time. so we want to add the App_rpt function to these systems and want to do it on the low cost side. so we use the cm108 based fob. we started out with these devices, learned a lot with these devices and still wish to use these devices, because of cost savings. Yeah, kudos to the Steves, Jims, and other really helpful people. Were it not for W9SH's help I would have been a lot longer in getting up and running with my node. Also thanks to N4IRS and K1LNX, I got to play with my node under Debian and change my Echolink announcements from phonetic to not phonetic callsigns. And all manner of things. Next project: I want to get an HF remote base running, except that my HF rig is an Elecraft K2/100. Seems to me it should be easy enough to send commands to it, as it's just ascii text over serial, but would need some direction as to what to modifry (break?) to make it work. Also, anyone wanna help me with either a CM108-based fob or URI cable to connect the K2? Yeah, kudos to the Steves, Jims, and other really helpful people. Were it not for W9SH's help I would have been a lot longer in getting up and running with my node. Also thanks to N4IRS and K1LNX, I got to play with my node under Debian and change my Echolink announcements from phonetic to not phonetic callsigns. And all manner of things. Next project: I want to get an HF remote base running, except that my HF rig is an Elecraft K2/100. Seems to me it should be easy enough to send commands to it, as it's just ascii text over serial, but would need some direction as to what to modifry (break?) to make it work. sound
cards. THEY DONT WORK WORTH A POO! They sound terrible, and are inconsistent. Friends dont let friends use internal soundcards to interface to radio systems.

I had seen a alsaradio channel driver and tried that but it errors our asterisk with a 127 error. Is there anything out there so that we can use serial/soundcard interfacing instead of a fob or the expensive quad card?

Well if we're REALLY going to commit this concept to ink (or paint rather) I think its time to publicly make the story behind the 'FOB' known so that this horrible misinformation can perhaps stop being propagated. I named these things 'FROBS' *NOT* 'FOBS'. See http://catb.org/jargon/html/F/frob.html for further explanation. Someone, I think Steve WA6ZFT either misinterpreted the name or perhaps it was just a type-o, but in any case the 'FOB' thing just got to be what everyone called them. If youre going to put it on a shirt, at least call it the correct name. Besides, 'FROB' will generate even more questions and strange looks then 'FOB' would anyway, and if you see someone giving you a smug grin (and they appear to be at least 50 years old), you should probably strongly encourage them to join you singing a bar or 2 of 'Alice's PDP-10' (see http://www.hactrn.net/sra/alice). My two cents (well probably more like 1/2 cent): Use what works for your particular application :) I gladly spent the $80 for the URI from DMK and it's great, that was my choice because I didn't have time to find and configure a CM108 based device and I wanted to get out of the gate running quickly. I've actually bought two total and I have -0- complaints about them, as I'm sure anyone will attest. But, as Roger put it below, this is ham radio, experimentation is encouraged and allowed, no matter how much money it costs in the end!!! Fun is the ultimate goal. I have found New-Egg to deliver what they advertise... Just go to newegg.com and do a search for cm108... they go for about $17 plus shipping... They have the caps installed so that eliminates that cost!

yes it takes time to compile and test the devices and time i have, in fact several of us here in the kc metro area have time and facilities to test with . just tell us how it was done...and we can/will start playing.... to come up with a solution. or if jim wants we can ship him the devices we have and he can tell us if it is possible to change the code for these units.
i like the fact all i need is PTT, discrimiator and tx audio to make a system work . i could careless about COS/TOS from the radio. this makes an interface real EZ! and the software makes the controller.
i am not a programmer but i have learned a lot from the elmers on this list these folks in particular: w9sh n4irs wb6nil kd8b wa6zft and many others.

What is the obsession with these FOBs? This community has a great source of quality interfaces, and there is NO reason not to utilize them. DMK doesn't HAVE to provide the URI, but thankfully they do. For all you who have bought knockoff FOBs with the hopes of them being a CM108, how much money have you wasted? If you are too cheap to buy a URI, go run an EchoStink node!

if it would make the fobs ezer to add since there seems to be a glut of the "clones" out there. i have bought so many of these from the C.H.Ina co via the usual hong-knog souces.
i have a few so a wide and varried sample for testing is not a problem they are just cluttering up the desk...

JUST DONT DO IT!!! There is a reason that we dont support regular
sound
cards. THEY DONT WORK WORTH A POO! They sound terrible, and are inconsistent. Friends dont let friends use internal soundcards to interface to radio systems.

I have been having a heck of a time trying to find a fob with a cm108 chip in it. I have 5 fobs here all from different suppliers and none of them have the right chip even though they were listed as a cm108.
I had seen a alsaradio channel driver and tried that but it errors our asterisk with a 127 error. Is there anything out there so that we can use serial/soundcard interfacing instead of a fob or the expensive quad card?
