I have two D510MO running the Centos ACID install - seems to work OK. The '510s are in Morex 5677 boxes with SSD's and power supplies from 12 VDC. I noticed two things: It seems like the fans want to run at the boot-up speed (default=50%). With the BIOS at the default value, the box gets warm to the touch. If you go into the BIOS and select 100% speed for the fans, the box runs nice and cool. I do not know if the fan would speed up eventually when things get hot - but why wait for that? These are very quiet fans even at full speed. The P/S In the Morex box is arranged so that the big 20-pin plug largely obstructs one of the fans. Since it is an exhaust fan, maybe this does not matter much. But it is really easy to rotate the P/S board 180 degrees and this seems to result in less obstruction of the fans. Final touch is to put some black tape on the vent holes next to the fans so that most of the air has to come from the other side of the box, rather than taking a short cut. Ken KE2N
I seriously doubt that a Morex 5677 (which is a NICE case for a normal, reasonable motherboard) would EVER even come CLOSE to the thermal requirements necessary for long-term reliable service from a D410/D510 board. I imagine that the thermal problems with Atom are mostly in fan-less installations. I did some measurements last night. With the two little fans running in the Morex 5677, the hottest hot spot in the air discharge is 18 degrees warmer than the room air (72 F in and 85-90 F out). This is with the D510mo running ACID and two fobs in operation. Total power into the box measures 19.5 watts including power supply losses. So - the heat sink is being exposed to air that averages about 9 degrees warmer than room temperature, at the nominal operating conditions. Except for the output grill, the box feels cool to the touch. I think this should be quite a happy arrangement. I will try to install lm-sensor / coretemp, or whatever, and see what the CPU reports as its internal operating temperature ... I was able to install lm-sensors and find the temperature readings. Nice thing to have I use is gkrellm, I have the gkrellm server loaded on all my boxes, and then I run the client on my Windows computer that I use for my daily work and able to monitor those temps/voltage and most of the system status of the linux box. gkrellm uses lm_senors for its temp/volts/fan info. gkrellm for windows http://www.srcbox.net/projects/gkrellm/ gkrellm for linux http://gkrellm.net On Tue, 3 Aug 2010, Ken wrote:
