Re: [App_rpt-users] Need some Ground Up Information
Thanks Marshall, that was what I was wondering. I will have to order a small screen as well as keyboard. I do have to do some configuring with the program, such as adding node number, the wifi number/passcode, etc. as well as other parameters. The next two questions are… 1) Does the Pi4 machine have to be connected to ethernet for the first configuration. I imagine that for the first time it would. 2) Does the current program work with Pi4? So, just to get it all straight in my feeble brain. Download the program image it onto an sd card. Simple enough. I have a Windows box to do just that. Insert the card into the Pi4 box and wait for it to do its thing. Now I would suppose that if I have a screen attached to the Pi unit, (as well as keyboard,) then a page should pop up with prompts for me to fill in for my particular node’s configuration. After that is all done. I plug the Pi into the RIM Lite I got from Repeater-Builder, plug the whole shebang into a newly acquired Alinco 235 radio and Voila! I should have a simplex allstar node for fellow amateurs in the area to enjoy. Now a more interesting question is this…. Can I program the node to connect to say the Alaskan Morning Net, the Winsytem, the Manchester Hub, etc at different times during the day or week. Lets say we start Monday through Friday with the Alaskan Morning Net and afterwards the node connects to the Winsystem through the Insomniac Net and then transfers over to the Manchester Hub, rinse and repeat everyday… is that possible? Again, thanks for everyone’s help. Regards, Jeffrey N6TDG
Jeffrey, It looks like you are on the right track. The only issue I see is that you are using a Pi4. The current image does not support the Pi4 only up to the Pi3 b + But other than that it should work if you follow the directions. Jeffery, As Marshal says you are on the right path. However just to let you know ... to set up Allstar you don't need to buy a monitor and keyboard just to set things up originally. If you plug a network cable into the PI you can look at your routers DHCP assignments and find the IP assigned to your PI. Once you know that you can use your Windows PC and use it as your monitor and keyboard. You would run a Program called Putty. When it starts it will ask for information. Use the IP address you obtained from your router, Use port 222 and tick the SSH button It will talk to the Pi and ask for your login information. Haven't done an install for some time so I'm not up to speed on the latest configuration process but sounds like the group has pointed you down the right path. And now one final comment. If all you own is a Raspberry Pi4 as Marshal pointed out the version of software that's available here isn't ready for the Pi4 yet. That leaves you with two options to run Allstar. 1. Purchase an older version of the Pi until a new version is available. 2. Check the Hamvoip group. Believe their version will run on the Pi4. I will say that from all reports I have seen the Pi4 requires more power and cooling and is somewhat of an overkill for what is needed just to run Allstar. Since you aren't using a web browser/gui with the Allstar it's is mostly ran headless and programmed from a terminal program from some other device such as Putty on your Windows PC or SSH from Linux. Hope that helps Larry - N7FM On 9/24/19 3:57 PM, Jeffrey Reid wrote:

Correct. I always use a ssh program like putty or https://mobaxterm.mobatek.net/ But unless I am mistaken, I though the default ssh port was 22? Lu VencL KA4EPS

Lu, You are correct the default SSH port for the current Pi image is 22. This is listed in the .readme file at the following location along with login user name and password. http://dvswitch.org/files/ASL_Images/Raspberry_Pi/Stretch/ 73 Marshall - ke6pcv From: App_rpt-users [mailto:app_rpt-users-bounces@lists.allstarlink.org] On Behalf Of Lu V Sent: Wednesday, September 25, 2019 6:11 AM To: Users of Asterisk app_rpt Subject: Re: [App_rpt-users] Need some Ground Up Information Correct.
