I'd like to embark on this journey on this fine Saturday, but before I start assembling cables I'd like to hear if anyone had any problems with getting this accomplished? Greetings, One of the things I have wanted to do, ever since I got interested in running a node of my own, is to create a very small node package. I've been working with the BeagleBoard ( http://beagleboard.org ) for awhile now and think it would be ideal for building a Pico Node. This Pico Node could even be worn on a person with everything required to operate (including internet device). My current Beagle is a rev C3, which is 600 Mhz with 256 MB RAM. The latest Beagle-xM version is 1 GHz, and has 512 MB RAM, Ethernet, 4x USB 2.0 host, stereo sound in/out, and all expansion headers and connectors already soldered in. That said, I'd really like to see if AllStarLink can be built on a BeagleBoard. I already have development images build for Beagle that includes a complete GCC toolchain, and have built software such as Python right on the board. I think a Beagle-xM could make a great Pico Node. Couple the Beagle-xM with a CradlePoint CTR-500 portable WiFi router, a wireless dongle of your choice, battery supply, and you have a completely portable and very lightweight Pico Node. Might I also recommend looking at the Chumby Hacker Board or a Soekris net5501 as a platform for a pico node. Also iaxRpt needs continued work. It is still very buggy. That raises a good question. All of the previously recommended boards (mini ITX) have faster cpu chips then these tiny SBCs. I am assuming the audio DSP functions require some real floating point horse power. How fast does a system have to be to run one URI? I believe a 1GHz BeagleBoard-xM could run at least one URI. The hardest part is gaining access to the onboard DSP. I think that even without DSP, the BeagleBoard-xM (also has 512 MB RAM, 4 USB 2.0 Host, USB OTG, etc) will be able to run an AllStar node just fine. My current node PC isn't all that powerful (1.7 GHz, Intel Celeron, 512 MB RAM) and it manages nicely. How do I pick an appropriate one for my application? Right now, I am thinking about getting two Alinco 2M mono band radios for this project. I've thought about maybe using the Motorola Maxtrax radios, but am not sure what is required to program them. I know it has to be a radio with the 16 pin connector. Beyond that I'm pretty much green with respect to setting up a repeater. I'd love to setup a small low power local service repater centered on my church's location. I haven't approached the church about this possibility yet, since it's still very early in the planning process. Those Motorola Maxtrax radios are really attractive because it's possible to get a pair of them on eBay for around $100.00 or so. Put these together with a $100.00 computer from our local FreeGeek store, and that's most of a repeater if I understand this all correctly. Yes I second the recommendation to thoroughly read the repeater-builder site. Also be aware that radios that aren't meant to be repeaters usually make poor repeaters without serious know-how. Issues of heat dissipation and spectral purity at lower-than-rated power levels are just the tip of the iceberg. There are many other issues which repeater-builder.com can help you understand. The most difficult thing to get in this area is a coordinated *frequency* to operate on. 2 meters (in this area) has a waiting list longer than my likely remaining lifespan. Maxtracs take some technical wizardry to get working on the ham bands - again repeater-builder is your source. Or better yet, someone who has already done the required work a few times. An alternative is the Hamtronics modules. The specs are good and they are simple to work on. Just the basic transmit and receive - do everything else with Asterisk. Alinco would work OK, provided you do not have any nearby strong signal competition. The image rejection and adjacent channel rejection is not all that good. Used duplexers can be found on eBay and other auction sites from time to time. Patience is a virtue there. GL Ken 27021
