[App_rpt-users] re Zello on Allstar

It’s amazing that app_rpt because of it’s underlying architecture, has the flexibility to do this sort of thing. It's really great that folks can experiment with it and learn. We also are very fortunate to have the AllStar network that enjoys interconnection from any (legal) source. No doubt Zello is one of those instances.

But I have to say Zello sounds like poop. They have connected to my node a couple of times and it’s just awful. The VOX doesn’t work well on Zello (VOX never does) and the audio is absolutely terrible. Wide usage of Zello in it’s current form could ruin AllStar.

If you want to experiment (with Zello or whatever) go for it. But be respectful of the larger AllStar network. People may have different expectations than you and may not appreciate what you are doing.

I get "outsiders" asking to use it but I have no true way knowing they are a ham. In zello set you mic and speaker for the opposite of what you set in zoiper. For example you feed the speaker into the mic and feed the mic into the speaker of zoiper. Basically cross the cables!

One we are using VOX so it acts like a Roger beep...Ya I know some of you are cringing but it's helpful in this application. We had users not know for sure if someone is still talking. It also alerts out local user that the person is on zello.

Zoiper is a good program but just not as user friendly as zello for a more true "walkie-talkie" feel. I thought this setup was going to be hoakie but for the end user it is smooth and seamless. The one draw back is I still need to zoiper to control my repeater when out of RF range.
