Adding 'allow-hotplug eth0' to the /etc/network/interfaces helps on some 
Ubuntu systems.  This tries to reconfigure the port when the link status 
changes.  Some systems appear to need it, on others it appears to be the 
default.  It doesn't hurt to add it.
