You're a bad guy, HI :-) One of the goals of hamradio is "learning", but 
that involves "teaching" ;-) It would be a great benefit for newcomers 
like me if you could add comments to the code as far as you understand, 
and improve things.

I'm unable to evaluate the amount of work required, and I can't help 
much, but according to all what I read, I would also vote for a port to 
1.8. I'll be happy to beta-test.
