I had this problem with a misconfigured deemphasis setting in simpleusb.conf.  Typically, you uncomment the following line only if you are tapping audio from the radio's discriminator output.

 

;deemphasis=yes         ; enable de-emphasis (input "to the node's usb dongle" from "radio's" discriminator)

 

Your audio levels could also be to low or too high.
