Luc,

The items in simpleusb-tune-menu are the step by step.

Be not afraid to use a little intuition. Your changes are not saved
until you execute a command *IN* the simpleusb-tune-menu, of which I am
going to let you figure out.

While not always obvious, the ASL box mutes DTMF, so you cannot use
that. There is a reason why a 1KHz tone at 3KHz deviation is used. Try
to whistle to as close to 1KHz as possible!..

It is best to use a calibrated service monitor for getting accurate
audio levels, first thing it keeps your node radio in spec. The other
thing is it keeps the audio nice and clean. Find a friend in the area
with a service monitor and have him/her teach you how to appreciate why
it must be used when adjusting audio levels used in radio.

The values metered on the RX level scale are accurate, so when the RX
deviation meter on the simpleusb-tune-menu says you are at 3KHz
deviation, then you are at 3KHz deviation... provided that signal you
are putting into the node radio is *actually* transmitting at 1KHz tone
at 3KHz deviation. Read the aforementioned paragraph.
