[App_rpt-users] Repeater Stuck Locked open for 18 hrs

That’s great Steve!! We thought we had our bases covered as well! We had dual network points provided to the repeater system.. The repeater is connected via Verizon Wireless through 4G LTE and backup systems range not only from DTMF commands to reset the system if needed but direct wifi point to point as well again our system still failed and required an onsite visit to shut the system down.. I suppose what I am saying is that you can have all the dedicated access you want to your site including dtmf controls and things do fail.. The bigger question to answer everything is why did the vpn portion of the service fail why did onsite Broadband connections fail why did the system lock open and become unresponsive.. As far as maintaining control of the system one can only do so much.. I am not going to pay some one to set at the repeater site for two years while we wait for it to fail again.. Its just not cost prohibitive in an Amateur radio hobby although everything has its expense example Verizon 60 a month Dedicated Broadband connection 80 a month Data center to manage the entire vpn services along with data center hub 90 a month.. again data center side never failed.. only the repeater its self failed.. In fact the system seemed to hang up the 41715 connection prior to the incident.. Which is odd..
Anyway thanks Steve for your thoughts on this! We will continue to look for better ways of controlling our Allstarlink system however I feel that having two dedicated internet access points to the system should have been enough..

Steve and the group:
It is still in the rules. Control has been broadened beyond a control radio to include fiber optic, telco, and wireline (to include internet). the radio can be any amateur frequency now, no longer required to be above 220 MHz.I believe you are referencing line (b):
§97.213 Telecommand of an amateur station.
An amateur station on or within 50 km of the Earth's surface may be under telecommand where:
(a) There is a radio or wireline control link between the control point and the station sufficient for the control operator to perform his/her duties. If radio, the control link must use an auxiliary station. A control link using a fiber optic cable or another telecommunication service is considered wireline.
(b) Provisions are incorporated to limit transmission by the station to a period of no more than 3 minutes in the event of malfunction in the control link.
(c) The station is protected against making, willfully or negligently, unauthorized transmissions.
(d) A photocopy of the station license and a label with the name, address, and telephone number of the station licensee and at least one designated control operator is posted in a conspicuous place at the station location.

Most of the exciters I use in repeater service, or hot spot for matter, have a TOT in the firmware. I crank them all the way up. Sometimes that is not as long as I would like but I feel better. As Kevin says, there are USB radio interfaces available with timers. The rules in the US may have changed but I remember a time when a repeater required a control channel on 220 MHz and above. But I'm old (licensed in 1969) and things change. The "belt and suspenders" approach can be a good thing.

If its supported, you might want to configure a Timeout Timer (TOT) on the repeater. This way even if the PTT is activated for long periods, the radio will stop transmitting after the timer expires.

I haven't had a stuck PTT on either AllStar controller. But, I do have a DTMF command that executes a Linux reboot. In rpt.conf it looks like ...
81234=cmd,/sbin/reboot
It seems to work OK. It might work on PTT stuck if the receiver is still listening and some of the software is functional.

Good point Keven! We are using DmKeng URIx for both repeaters on the computer.. At the time of arrival out at the repeater site.. 2 meter repeater was not stuck in the open position but the UHF repeater was stuck open with Red light on on the URIx I do not believe the green heart beat was flashing we think it was solid.. Mark doesn’t remember other than the red led was solid..
There are no versions of Asterisk/app_rpt along with hardware that are stable enough to prevent this condition from ever happening.
You may want to consider a radio adapter that disables the PTT when the application has crashed or stopped, there's a hardware malfunction, or a communications issue with the radio adapter. The URI doesn't currently have this functionality, but there are several others that do.
