None of that is true with Community. You can actually use Community in > a maillist only mode, there is a user setting for it. Take a look at http://discourse.org and this post https://meta.discourse.org/t/presentations-on-discourse/128648
Can you post the actual location where I can find the user setting to reconfigure it?
From your links posted I could find no place to change the settings.

The mailman list was closed without mentioning it had been updated to community. Now that it's temporarily back the opportunity to correct that presents its self. Activity on the community site has been good and all are welcome to join us there.
