I think it comes down to personal preference - as some have noted, vi(m) is part of BusyBox (always there). But I always make sure I have nano installed on my systems, this is my personal preference. Heck, I use nano on my Macbook to edit system files. I like to SSH into whatever boxes I have, or go over a serial terminal, or what have you, anything other than a GUI. Once again, this is personal preference. I also do NOT run Windows. Again, personal preference.
In summary, if you like vi(m), be my guest. If you like nano, good on you. And if you use WinSCP, well, thats ok. It all comes down to what the operator is most comfortable with, and which is most expedient for their needs and skill set. However, I do admit, knowing how to install nano on your box and SSH or console in case you ever need it is a good thing, and that is easily achieved from asking Mr Google.

If you are unwilling to learn vi, you best question your ability to support the node properly. Or you had better get node maintenance and responsibility into the hands of some that is.
There is no reason for me to learn vi. Please see below.
In the beginning I was sloughing off learning vi, then saw the error of my ways and got to know it. I am not the best at it, but it will save you grief. It just plain works and is always there.
As I said before, I use Win SCP. That way I have no need for a monitor or keyboard on any of my nodes... Or the need to "suck it up" and know how to use vi as you have demanded.
So "suck it up" dude!
