CF is meant to be essentially read-only. Dont think of it as anything else then an easily-programmable EPROM.
First of all, there is NO SUCH THING as a UNIX-like OS that 'doesnt write to the disk much', no matter how much you may convince yourself otherwise.
Also, the writes to CF completely disrupt the rest of the stuff going on with the CPU/system, and therefore must only be relegated to 'offline' activities.
If you want to use a 'standard' (non-embedded) distro, use an SSD device NOT a flash card. Pay the price. Dont whine.
Otherwise, use a RAM-based operating distro, SUCH as Limey Linux that LOADS from CF and RUNS in RAM. This is a VERY nice option for app_rpt nodes.

Yikes! Thats what my repeater is running. I am using a 16GB CF card as my HDD been working greate. It does not do much disk activty since its just a repeater. I hope my D510 does not melt down like Jim stated.

Limey Linux is a VERY good option for a small system that is really only going to be a repeater and not do other things. If you are intending to use a full Linux distro, such as ACID (highly recommended) you REALLY want to do it with and SSD or similar device. If not, use Limey. It simple, painless, and efficient.

Ok, managed to talk with our repeater group and decided to move foward with using apt_rpt for our controller. I've managed to snag a decent intel atom D510 board and 4gb of ram for it as well as a direct 12v power supply. Now we are wondering about a hard drive option, USB Flash Drive, CF Card Solution, SSD mini-PCI card, what would you suggest for the longest life and least amount of headaches? I plan on running as much of the filespaces in a ramdrive that I can to reduce access to the SSD device.
