Aye, I agree. I'd pay a couple of Meg more download just to have it and avoid problems like this. Justification: "Its an embedded platform, and you won't need..." Uh? Did I miss the point? Its an embedded LINUX platform, and source is available, so you need source.
Its a concept thats being sorely missed in Down Under at the moment too mate, let me assure you...! However, to continue working while I'm on my trip to Sydney, and because this isn't a big tower I'm using, like a PC or Mac, I'll be dragging the RPi along with me and hooking it up to the motel rooms HDTV. Commercial TV programming? I can't stand commercial TV =P
I calculate it'll be the side of a larger previous generation laptop, complete with the 13.8VDC 23Amp power supply. I couldn't be bothered finding a 2Amp USB power supply for the Pi, and I may need the 13.8VDC up my sleeve.
Many thanks for your help so far, and lets hope the RPi people get back to me in short order, and with a solution that doesn't eat my 1GB GPRS/ EDGE allowance while I'm away. Then again, there *is* wifi at the motel, but I don't control that network... obsessive need for control, I know... ^.~

You got it in one - "Its too fast moving to..." what? Provide a package for a kernel you support? I know the RPi is only new hardware, but yeah, you're right.
Ok, I'm using the Zaptel I SVN checked out with the 1.4.23-pre, so thats a win there. However, I might have to bug the RPi people (or Raspbian, as the case may be) to provide the kernel sources. It would be nice to just have an apt package.
So, back to the RPi forums =)

Yes, you *HAVE* to install Zaptel/tonezone. Yes, you *HAVE* to install our WORKING version of it. Yes, you *HAVE* to have the kernel sources.
Is, by any chance the Raspberry-Pi just as COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE to get valid kernel source for as the BeagleBoard-xM stuff is? If so, I wish you the best of luck.

Hi all,
I installed "libusb-dev" and that solved the immediate problem. Chan_simpleusb worked fine after that.
However, a bit of a poke around "make menuselect" and I realised I'd been reading it totally wrong...! I can't actually select app_rpt without tonezone. And it appears I need Zaptel for tonezone. I'd installed tonezone-dev and tonezone2.0 via apt, but this hasn't worked.
So I've posted a specific question to the Asterisk forums, once again explaining my position as to why I'm not using the latest software and all that (thank god no one has got up me about it yet... I am prepared for it though...!), and just some questions as to "Can I hack the source files to look for the apt version of tonezone, or do I *really* need to get the kernel source for Zaptel?"
I'll keep you all updated, of course, I'm sure someone else out there is crazy enough to roll their own on a RPi...
