Did you try the transmit audio adjustment shown here? http://app-rpt.qrvc.com/node/28 Basically you have the controller send a 1 Khz tone and adjust your tx for 3 Khz dev. The document is incorrect however... the command in default configurations is *989 (not *99). My system has 3 PCs, two of them have "private" nodes (node number <2000 not registering with the Allstar address server). These private nodes are half-duplex or simplex links (duplex=1 in rpt.conf) - they are connected to transceivers (and use DSP squelch/ctcss just like the main node). Everything is connected together by gigabit Ethernet behind a common router. When I key up the "public" node, the other linked nodes start transmitting in a fraction of a second. But, when I transmit into one of the "private" nodes, from a cold start, it takes 3+ seconds before the main node starts transmitting. Other than the very first fraction of a second, no audio is lost - it is just delayed. Once things are going, the time delay largely disappears (i.e., private nodes are now keying up during the hang-time of the public node). What is causing the long startup time? I can key up, say my callsign and go back to receive, before the public node has even started to transmit. At the moment, the nodes are running versions 267 and 266. Each of the [nodes] stanzas include the local IP addresses of the "other" nodes in addition to its own. If it makes any difference - the connections were made *from* the public node *to* the private node. Ken
Oh the 2 nodes that have the "delay", try starring Asterisk manually (first by doing a 'service asterisk stop' then 'asterisk -vvvvc'). The system is "running" when you get the CLI> prompt. I restarted one of those nodes in the way you suggested and it seems to have fixed the delay (at the moment) The restart spit out a LOT of messages - I will send you the list separately. If you read the instructions on the support pages for creating custom voice announcements with the Audacity program, you'll see that you are instructed to set the final level of the voice file to -6 db before saving it. I assume that this is based on 5Khz deviation radios. The voice announcements are mixed with all the other levels through the sound card chip and I suspect that the only way to adjust the voice without affecting the other levels is to re -record the sound files with a lower level specifically for use with narrow band 2.5 Khz radios. This is not right - if you set up for 2.5 kHz deviation, then the loudest sounds will be 2.5 kHz deviation no matter what (assuming you have selected the "limit" option in the config file). As someone else pointed out, that means running the test tone so it gives 1.5 kHz deviation in RADIO TUNE TXVOICE (giving you 2.5 kHz at full blast). The -6dB guideline is just to allow some "headroom". If you have two sources with 0.5 (relative voltage) level, the waveform at times will add up to just 1.0 voltage level and you will stay clear of the limiter. If you have more signals, or higher levels, then you will start hitting the output limiter and things will sound compressed. Without the limiter you will get nasty distortion. Another factor (noted in the instructions) is that if you are using composite audio, the levels for tone and voice must not exceed 1000 in total - or you will get distorted audio, even *with* the limiter enabled. Having said that, the pre-recorded sounds are actually hotter than this guideline. "connected.gsm", for example, hits -3 dB in Audacity as do "version.gsm" and others. The recordings are loud and slow so that you will understand them. But many people would prefer quiet fast ones most of the time.
