Using a handmic while using a URI
Hey folks, I am still planning out the setup for my node. One issue that came up is that of microphones. With the URI, I will have to connect it to the microphone jack of the radio using a RJ45 and to the speaker output. The speaker problem can be easily solved with a splitter. As far as the mic goes, I am a bit confused. If the URI is plugged into the mic port, I obviously cannot use the radio with a hand mic. Is there a way that I can simultaneously use the radio with a RJ45 mic connector at the same time that the URI is connected? KE5VQL Noah
Noah, Does your radio have an auxiliary connector where you could connect the URI to leave your RJ45 connector free to use with the microphone? Alternatively, you might consider installing iaxRpt on one of your PC’s that will give you a desktop dispatch application type access to the radio over via the URI over your LAN. I do that here and it works great. The iaxRpt app works really well but if you could interface at least the microphone line through a RIGblaster if you have one laying around. You obviously would not use the internal USB sound device if your blaster model is so equipped, but would rather just route the mic audio and PTT through the blaster and connect your stock microphone to the front mic port. The last option would be to homebrew a switchbox with a connector that fits your mic and a cable with an RJ45 plug to your radio and will only need to wire in DPDT toggle switch that will allow you to switch the transceivers mic and PTT lines between the local microphone and the URI. Well, you could take apart the radio and solder to the back of the mic jack, which I have done in the past, but if youre using it for an allstar node there will not be much purpose for the mic as it will only TX to the radios listening to the output frequency of the node, and will not be transmitted via any internet links. Well, I need the radio to be able to use the microphone. I know that it is not the easy solution but it is the one that I am going for. I do not want to open up the radio so I am going to try and design a circuit so that the mic and the URI can be connected into the microphone jack. I will also include some digital logic so that if both the URI and the mic a trying to key up, then only the signal from the mic will go through. I will try and upload a schematic later. Well, I need the radio to be able to use the microphone. I know that it is not the easy solution but it is the one that I am going for. I do not want to open up the radio so I am going to try and design a circuit so that the mic and the URI can be connected into the microphone jack. I will also include some digital logic so that if both the URI and the mic a trying to key up, then only the signal from the mic will go through. I will try and upload a schematic later.
You didn't say what kind of radio it is (or if you did, I didn't see it). The best and/or easiest way to implement this is going to vary with the type of radio. At the very worst, you need is a SPDT switch (CD4053 appropriately biased, reed relay, whatever) and a couple of steering diodes. But depending on the radio, it could be as simple as hard-OR'ing the PTT's together and resistively summing the audio. You likely have way more audio output available from the URI than you'll need to drive the mic input, so there's a good chance all you need to do is add enough series R in the audio coming from the URI to prevent loading the hand mic.
