Support for the Doug Hall box already exists in app_rpt. Do a search for "app_rpt frequency agile remote". As with most of this stuff documentation is scarce, but can be found with creative search strings. I've not used the Doug Hall box, but have a Syntor X/XCAT running. Just a note, I do not think that a USB to parallel converter will work for this either. The usb converters don't seem to support the pin punching in linux. I would be happy to hear if someone gets that to work though.

If You want to develop a new method, I'm sure there are a lot of folks that have no parallel ports that would send you flowers for your work !

Sorry, poor humor, but it's just not a reasonable thing considering the alternatives. The parallel port is the easiest way to generate the timings required to send data to it. Remembering that the RBI-1 was designed for hardwired controllers that already had a serial data and strobe line like the ACC's and CAT.
