I agree hamtronics is the worse way to go if 1. You don't have the equipment to run PMs about 4 times a year. The failure rate is God awful. I have used them in temperature controlled and not with the same failure rate. They drift of frequency or sensitivity goes to hell I have used radius radios. They just don't hold up under continuous duty even with fan control. Not much better with the GM radios. I'm looking at testing using a CDM1250 VHF and try it. The interface with DMK URI is perfect. I have a different question. I'm not in the US, so buying a URI is out. I Have the USB audio dongles and want to start cheaply. Does anyone have a cable diagram for using a USB dongle with something like the Baofeng radios? I'm only looking at it for a low usage node, so duty cycle is not a problem. I'm torn between connecting the radio(s) to the dongle directly or using an audio transformer in between. Any one have any experience using either? The main use would be a set of allstar nodes to provide communication in emergencies between places hidden from the local repeater by hills, about a mile apart. Also does anyone know if there has been any work on using a USB DVB-T dongle (aka poor man's SDR) as a receiver? They are really cheap and common here. TIA and 73, Geoff. -- Geoffrey S.
