Folks, will current distros of pickle, or whatever we use on the beagle boards run DSP for PL decode or noise squelch? I have a BeagleBoard XM and a BBB, about three months back version. I’d love to tuck one of these inside a Nokia BSR-450 repeater eliminating its squelch and PL encode/decode (well, it doesn’t have those)??? Thanks GeorgeC George J Csahanin W2DB 2360
George, I can't speak for the XM and Pickle but you could try it on the BBB. I usually don't recommend anything but simpleusb on the BBB. usbradio on all platforms has its flaws and you have to be cautious about audio distortion problems in both directions because it is often bad in the outgoing direction and you don't hear that. usbradio is notorious for this and a lot of people are so use to it they don't even know it is happening. It is amazing how ears differ. Some would listen to a tin box radio all day and others would complain about a $1000 speaker. That being said it is worth a try knowing the possible limitations. Just bring up a BBB and configure it normally in simpleusb. Once you have that working switch to usbradio and experiment. I would be interested in what you find. 73 Doug WA3DSP http://www.crompton.com/hamradio From: george@dyb.com To: App_rpt-users@ohnosec.org Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2014 19:55:29 -0500 Subject: [App_rpt-users] questions on beagle Folks, will current distros of pickle, or whatever we use on the beagle boards run DSP for PL decode or noise squelch? Beagleboard XM comes with beagle.conf, which is simpleusb like... e.g. no DSP, relying on hardware PL decode. I don't know if you can use usbradio.conf for DSP for a PL decode. I ran usbradio on a GTX (no cor line available) and it worked fine. And yes usbradio decodes PL fine. On Thu, Oct 30, 2014 at 7:36 PM, Bob <kk6ecm@gmail.com> wrote:

Chuck, was that on one of the beagle boards? OK, thanks, that’s what I was looking for. I was trying to avoid a Com-Spec tone decoder or encoder. I may kluge in a Micor Encoder and decoder. Big fan of reverse burst, etc... But that answered my question, and pretty much as expected. I’m very familiar with the issues around usbradio in general. I’ve used it a lot. What I have always found odd is that same computer, same CM108 dongle, plays tones, etc fine in windows, but in Linux it is flaky. Too bad, though. The idea is a good one. I have one “unlisted” node still running this way. Low (very low) activity, so usable. We are running usbradio with DSP PL decode on an ACID server, and we've had no issues. The radio has a Com-Spec tone decoder, which we ignore because folks thought it sounded too tinny... guess we could have install a de-emphasis ckt, but it was easier to just "turn-on" the DSP, and not run simple USB. Not tried usbradio and DSP in the XM, which I'm using with the DMK LOX. As Doug pointed out different ears hear things differently... I just go with the majority opinion because my old ears just don't discriminate well enough to judge :-) Thanks, Bob kk6ecm _____ From: George Csahanin [mailto:george@dyb.com] Sent: Thursday, October 30, 2014 7:41 PM To: Bob; App_rpt-users@ohnosec.org Subject: Re: [App_rpt-users] questions on beagle OK, thanks, that's what I was looking for.
