When your system disk craters, you have your settings in an eprom, or move the URI to another computer after the system craters, the settings travel with the URI. I have no spares, usually you get them from DMK in less time than you would haggling over a price, waiting for someone to get to the post office, ship them, etc. Coast to coast is 3 days priority mail every time I get them.
The eeprom stores the level settings and is never necessary but might be desirable if you are using the interface with multiple radios. You would mount the eeprom in the connector of each radio cable and store the settings for that radio. Then when you switched cables the settings would follow along with it. If you are just using one radio you would not need the eeprom and even if you were using more than one radio being without it it would just mean you would have to run through the settings again when you changed radios. Without the eeprom level settings are stored in a configuration file on the computer when you run the level setting utility. For SimpleUSB the file is called 'simpleusb_tune_usb.conf'. and it looks like this - [usb] ; name=usb ; devicenum=1 devstr=1-1 rxmixerset=500 txmixaset=500 txmixbset=500 The file is created by 'simpleusb-tune-menu' but you can edit it manually if you like. Look at the DMK website under support files and there is a description of this. Can't you store an ID string in the EEPROM for identifying multiple URIs on a system, so the computer knows which interface to activate when, which is useful for crossband repeaters and the like. That was my impression of why it was there - I could be way off the mark though, and bow to superior knowledge in these matters.
