VPN or other option?
Is it possible to set a portable node up to where you do not have to access the router and do port forwarding where you connect it to be able to gain operability? Could a VPN be set to do tunneling to say, your home QTH and bypass this step? I have not done any VPN work in linux. Thanks for any help!!! Keri KB0YNA Mesa County, Colorado RACES
You could do this with OpenVPN. Portable node would have to be a client and a server at your QTH like you mentioned. OpenVPN would have to be setup in bridged mode on the server so that your network can send traffic back to the VPN client. It's very feasible but will take some work - most of it on the QTH side. Just remember when you're doing this how the traffic will need to flow to get to a remote VPN client and that your portable node is acting as a server on your WAN. Hopefully this helps. You can also take a look at softether as well -- it supports OpenVPN and runs on both Windows and Linux. I'm one of the engineers for Hawaii CERT/ACS. Amateur Radio plays a real big part in our command and control efforts here in Hawaii as we are part of a primary response team. I have put Cradlepoint Routers in place that can drive a multitude of different activities and handle most any type of VPN connectivity into City/County secure enterprises. We were very transparent with the different with the County of Hawaii in wanting to do this so the IT Department for the County is supportive because they understand the design. We have successfully deployed these routers under LAN/WAN, WiFI, Exceed Satellite Internet, private point-to-point microwave as well as many others. You can control traffic with a significant amount of integrity. Local users can also use it's WIFI capabilities to access critical data services using their SmartPhones or Tablets. We use these routers to Egress/Ingress our DMR Networks, Asterisk, VOIP point-to-point (Dial Tone) and many others to say the least. Best of all, these Cradlepoint MBR1200B's are very inexpensive.
