Randy, The MOBO specs state environmental temp max is 104º. I know our Mtn site exceeds that temp during summer temps and premature failure may be an issue. Make sure you check your environmental specs before deploying to a remote site. Corey ********************
Yup - these Atom processors will just shut down if they get too hot. I found that out once by accident. I suspect that the no-fans-needed concept refers to use in a climate controlled environment. Ken

If you check the actual specifications, they are good to 55c in a sealed container and are good to 85C in any form of exposed. Well - to clarify ... my particular case was a D510 which has some kind of on-die temperature sensor that is used to shut down the system. The exact temperature of shutdown is not really known. Here are the words: The temperature at which the THERMTRIP# signal becomes active is individually calibrated during manufacturing. The temperature at which THERMTRIP# becomes active is roughly parallel to the thermal profile and greater than the PROCHOT# activation temperature. Once configured, the temperature at which the THERMTRIP# signal is asserted is neither re-configurable nor accessible to the system. The way I cooked it was to mount the PC at the top of a cabinet containing a 300 watt paging amplifier. Seemed fine until the cabinet fan came unplugged. Then it nicely shut down the PC at the designated temperature. Ken

Hi everyone, Okay, well, I might as well toss in my $0.02! I've found the weak-point on many of the Atom MB's to be the southbridge/VGA controller. Many boards don't include heatsinks on these chips and they run *hot* --even headless, in text mode. But, there is a simple solution! Just apply a small adhesive attached heatsink (available on Ebay). I've been using this trick for a few years now with no MB failures whatsoever...Also, in very hot industrial areas, I'll put a small fan in the case (Ebay) to move the air around.
