I'm compelled to reply on the subject, as I posted the original message.
It's unclear to me if your response was intended to be brusque, or if
perhaps that was just due to the nature of email. I'm going to assume it
was the latter, as I've read helpful posts from you in the past.
One of things I enjoy about app_rpt is that there are multiple ways to
accomplish things. There are also countless undocumented features of
app_rpt and it's associated software. I don't understand though when
someone feels it's necessary to publicly berate someone for asking a
question. That stifles creativity, and before you know it, the group
becomes a rather unfriendly one, e.g - IRLP.
The idea of using multiple copies of rpt.conf and copying a symlink is a
good one, and is something I have done in the past. I have ran into
situations where 'rpt reload' causes connected nodes to disconnect, and so
on, causing a real problem on a linked system.
Which is why I asked the question in the first place.. The only 'dumb'
question is the one you never ask.

Andrew Jackson once opined that it's a poor mind that can't figure more
than one way to spell a word...same applies here. Creativity is called for;
if it doesn't exist...well, how about figuring out either via scripting,
bit banging, or other functionality how to accomplish the equivalent
through other means? Not every possible combination can be predicted by a
software author.
That's why capabilities are provided to 'roll your own' and it's running on
the OS platform it is running on: if it's not in the application, there is
some way YOU can, using the rich set of tools that are freely provided, do
what needs be done.
We can't expect Jim to do everything.
