This is because OSS is not supported and marked as broken in current Linux distributions.  You can either use a kernel that has it compiled in or you can do what I did and use:

ALSA
PulseAudio
osspd (emulates oss through pulse)

I’ll write up some basic instructions for how mine is working... but the net of it it is that without /dev/dsp1 your asl can’t send or receive audio via  your sound card (URI)

Maybe I’m talking out of turn, I did not read the entire thread back.
