Well Gervais,
You are in the right place for help with allstar and app-rpt.

What you do and how you do it is not entirely written in stone.
Lots of dependencies on what you have to work with and any site /
hardware limitations.

Sp your first step is probably reading, and lots of it so you can
make the right decisions for your install from the beginning.

This link may help get you started so you are asking the right
questions anyway...

Asterisk/app_rpt | The fusion of 2-way radio systems and VoIP<http://docs.allstarlink.org/drupal/>

The ohnosec.org/drupal site will be going away soon, if it hasn't all ready, due to lack of support. While the domain name ohnosec (that moment you realize you really ...

Since the last time I have responded to this same question, some time
ago, a lot has changed.
Many flavors of computer hardware are supported including raspberry
pi.
I don't wish to advise you on what you should use but if I were you
starting out, I think I would experiment a bit with a old PC running
at 2ghz and 2gb ram
with the ACID software found at allstarlink.org
get to know the in's and out's before leaping into unfamiliar hardware
that might add to the learning pain.

You might state to the group what you intend to do with the system...
ie remote mountain repeater or wide area voted system
and perhaps someone will pick it up from there.

Anyway, this is the place to ask questions to your problems.
Plenty of guys read this daily.

73 for now,

To interface it you'll need to make a cable and solder it to some pick off
points.

Attached is the drawing I made when wiring MSR2000's to controllers.

All you need is an A&S (Audio and Squelch) card and a Station Control
card. I don't use the "squelch card", as the squelch in the A&S card is
superior.

I like pin 8 on the A&S card for discriminator audio, pin 17 for muted
de-emphasised audio
Pin 20 on the A&S for COS (active hi). I typically soldered on a PNP
transistor in the A&S card and pulled an open collector out to pin 5 for an
active low COS line.

Tx audio is on pin 11 of the squelch card.
PTT (active low) is pin 7 of the Station Control Card.

Cheers,
Jesse

What if anything could cause your node to key up without you knowing about it?
I check my node status and in 8 hours 15 mins. I have 285 keyups. Buy I happen to know that the node was only keyed up physically 15 times on that 8 hour window.
So I don’t know where the 285 is coming from . So can a node key up without you knowing it?? If so where do I start looking for the problem . This has me confused.

I would not get to excited about those stats David,

I think you will find that while you are connected to some other node
in the network that it counts every cos trigger of any connected node
even if your node never drops out.
So it's not just counting local cos triggers.

The short answer to your Baofeng question is but a question itself
since I'm not familiar with it...

If it will work on any repeater, it will work. But one would need to
question the stability and sensitivity of those products for use in a
repeater.

As you are new, I thought I might direct you to some terminology so
you might ask the right questions the right way to get a accurate
answer.
And I'm not sure why this is not explained to newbies on any of the
websites, perhaps it is and I have not seen it.

Allstar is a network of repeater systems connected by software called
app_prt which is a open source software riding on top of asterisk
which is also a open source software of a VOIP telephone PBX.

All of these software installations ride on top of various versions of
the linux operating system.

It is the app_rpt software that has interface to your radios.
When you connect to the network, you are basically making a VOIP call
to other stations via the asterisk PBX.
So your first start (in my opinion) is to get a working model of the
computer with software in operation, then worry about how to interface
the radios.
You have a lot to learn about this and lucky for you, many have worked
hard to make it easier to get it started.
But it does require some knowledge and will to do from many areas.

For a install on a RPi, Here is some reading and tutorials

http://docs.allstarlink.org/drupal/node/170

Allstar on Dial - QSL.net<http://www.qsl.net/w2ymm/dial_howto.html>

It is just a quick thing I put together, This should not be your go to source for info

http://docs.allstarlink.org/drupal/node/75

There is always more than one way to skin a cat. Keep that in mind
throughout.

This can be a frustrating adventure depending on your knowledge in
computers, the linux OS and radio/repeaters.

Please know that this project is completed entirely by volunteers who
do it for the fun of it, donating hundreds if not thousands of hours
to it.
And there is always more to be done.

Perhaps one of the Pi users can chime in with better set of
instruction/introductions, I use the ACID version... Good luck

Additionally, I should have mentioned this possibility to my last
post...

Not sure, but I think when you use the scheduler and issue commends
through it,
(like time announcements etc)
it may trigger a count to the cos/key-ups.
The reason I say that is in the software, I think the logical cos must
be true to accept commends.
But as I say, not sure. And I'm not sure it is all that important
unless it's causing you a problem.
