Port forwarding will not affect your ability to outbound connect, Only inbound traffic. do 'iax2 show registry' from the asterisk cli and see if you're registered.
Are you behind a NAT device? If so check your port forwarding (though you'd likely get a fail to connect message if this was the issue).
